20 October 2004 - HSC's Programme for Improvement of Health and Safety Management

The Health and Safety Commission's (HSC) commitment for the improvement of health and safety management in the public sector, have set up their priority programme of work by means of the Government Setting an Example (GSE) programme.

The GSE programme involves central and local government and public services addressing their health and safety issues.   The aim of the programme, it is hoped, will make a considerable contribution to the improvement of service delivery, thus creating healthier and more productive workforces, which in turn will provide improvement and efficiency of production within the public sector.

The pages for the programme, aim to provide information on the following:

  • What the programme is achieving
  • Case studies from public sector organisations that have improved their health and safety management
  • Other sources of information on health and safety in the public sector.

The GSE vision for the programme is as to:

“To reduce the number of working days lost in the civil service and wider public sector, especially those caused by work related accidents and ill-health, by 30%, by 2010”
