12 October 2004 - Updates on HSE Website for Workplace Accidents and Work Related Ill-Health Costs to Britain

Interim estimates updated on costs to Britain of workplace accidents and work related ill-health has been prepared by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The updated estimates show an indication in 2001/02 of the failure costs within health and safety to businesses.

A breakdown of these failure costs is as follows:

 
  • employers between £3.9 - £7.8 billion
  • individuals between £10.1- £14.7 billion
  • the economy between £13.1 - £22.2 billion
  • society as a whole between £20 - £31.8 billion

These figures not only benefit in making a case for organisations to comply with health and safety law, they encourage employers to realise the benefits of good health and safety strategies.
