5 November 2004 - New Guidance by HSE on Leadership of Major Hazards

Major hazard industries, such as railways, chemical manufacture and storage industries etc. can create health and safety risks for many people within their proximity.   The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognising this, consulted with companies within the major hazard industries and produced a new guidance to help and encourage directors and senior managers to assess their current approach to potential hazards and improve upon the health and safety provisions they already have in place.

Head of HSE's Hazardous Installations Directorate, Mr. Chris Willby commented:

"Senior management commitment and involvement are vital for successful health and safety performance. This booklet is intended as a guide for senior managers in the major hazard industries to help them achieve the continuous improvement in health and safety which should be a key objective of every organisation. The checklist format gives useful prompts in terms of some of the behaviours required to successfully lead for health and safety."

A booklet, originally produced for the on-shore industry, has now been revised by the Hazardous Installations Directorate and includes the off-shore major hazard industry also.  This booklet can be viewed by clicking the following:  Leadership for the major hazard industries
