5 November 2004 - HSE Model for Assessing Slipperiness of Floors |
||
| The Health and
Safety Laboratory (HSL), on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
have conducted research using a "slip potential model", in order to assess
the slipperiness of floors. Slips trips and falls on level floors account for at least 35,000 injuries each year, with the majority, according to statistical figures by the HSE, being slips. Assessment and quantification, using the model, of various types of slips, such as, contamination, pedestrian factors, cleaning, environment etc., provides a robust test method not only within the workplace, but also in public places and can be used in both laboratory-based assessments and on installed floors. These instruments have assisted the HSE and Local Authorities in enforcement, improvement notices and prosecution.
