The Workers' Safety Adviser (WSA) Challenge Fund supports partnerships and aims at workers becoming involved in occupational health and safety.   Six workshops are to take place throughout the country, in a bid to encourage applicants to apply for the funding being made available.

The first of the six venues takes place today, 3 November 2004, in Glasgow, at the Scottish TUC, 333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with the remaining five as follows:

  • 4   November 2004 - HSE, Rose Court, 2 Southwark Bridge, LONDON (Rose Room)
  • 16 November 2004 - Arden House, Regent Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne
  • 17 November 2004 - Government Buildings, 5th floor, Ty Glas, Llanishen, Cardiff
  • 23 November 2004 - The Priory Rooms, Friends Meeting House, 40 Bull Street, Birmingham
  • 25 November 2004 - The Mechanics Centre, 103, Princes Street, Manchester.

Some of the organisations already selected for the funding this year have been Trade Unions, Local Authorities, Trade Associations and Chambers of Commerce.

Head of HSE's Worker Involvement Unit Mr Stuart Bristow commented:

"We encourage people to come to workshops to help them make good applications. We are looking for a strong commitment to partnership working. We want organisations to come together to generate worker involvement using approaches that will enthuse both employers and workers.
We are looking to fund innovative projects that, through the deployment of a Workers' Safety Adviser, will establish long-lasting arrangements for involving staff in health and safety in small organisations and result in improved occupational health and safety performance."

The funding will benefit local organisations and small businesses within the community to improve upon their health and safety with worker consultation having been proved to reduce accidents and ill-health within the workplace.

Applications for the second round opens on 1 December 2004 and closes on 21 January 2005.
