27 November 2004 - HSE's Blitz on Transport Related Accidents Within Farms

The Health and Safety's (HSE's) unannounced inspection visits on farm vehicles in the North and West Devon and Torridge areas gave rise to 25 improvement notices being issued and 1 prohibition notice.

It is the belief of the HSE, that training and the wearing of safety equipment, such as safety helmets when using quad bikes requires correction, as fatalities on farms within the UK are still the largest cause of transport-related accidents.

The next week long visit by the HSE will commence on 6 December 2004 in the North Devon and West Somerset areas and will be looking at all types of farm vehicles, where the two main areas being focused on will be as follows:

  • ATV Safety - for the provision of safety headgear and safety training.
  • All other farm transport - for competence of the drivers and maintenance of vehicles.

The leader of the HSE blitz inspector commented:

"Fatalities on farms remain at a high level and around one third of those fatal accidents involve transport. There are many ways in which farmers and their employees can address these issues and take some simple and inexpensive steps to help prevent these tragic accidents occurring."
