18 November 2004 - HSE Offences and Penalties Report Now With New Format

The launch of the 5th annual Offences and Penalties Report by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will now only be available in a new format from their webpages.   The new format will provide information on regional average fines imposed, naming companies convicted in prosecutions.   There will also be video clips of the people who have previous experience of health and safety incidents as well as all the usual information provided in previous reports.

Within the past year, a total of 206.000 regulatory contacts were made by the HSE, incidents and complaints investigated were almost 28,000.   There were also 11,295 improvement and prohibition notices issued and 982 prosecution cases.

Other findings within the report are as follows:

  • 90% of the 1700 respondents strongly agreed that health and safety is important for staff productivity and morale
  • 82% felt they must comply with health and safety regulations to protect their reputation
  • only 45% would be more likely to act on the regulator's advice because of its enforcement powers.
