10 November 2004 - Rail Derailment Tragedy at Level Crossing in Ufton Nervet

Following the derailment at Ufton Nervet level crossing in West Berkshire, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have now completed their on-site investigation, although they will still continue to support the ongoing investigation by the British Transport Police (BTP).

The HSE have gathered the necessary evidence they require from the scene, which will now be subject to expert examination.   No formal investigation by the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) will take place under the Health and Safety at Work Act Section 14(2).   However, a formal inquiry consisting of a panel of three, independent of all organisations involved, by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), will take place.   Furthermore, the HSE will support, monitor and implement any findings made.
