19 May 2004 - Latest National Fire Statistics

The latest national fire statistics covering the second quarter of 2003 and the year ending 30 June 2003 have been published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

  • The UK Fire and Rescue Service attended just over one million fires and false fire alarms during the year ending 30 June 2003, ie 3% more than in the previous year

  • The total number of fires attended increased by 6% to 564,900 and within this total, the number of “primary” fires (fires involving property, vehicles and/or casualties) fell by 3% to 217,700, but there was a 13% increase (to 335,000) in the number of “secondary” fires, mainly because of an increase in grassland fires in the very warm Spring of 2003

  • The provisional figure for the number of fire related deaths in the year ending 30 June 2003 is 587, 18 fewer than in the year ending 30 June 2002. This compares with 613 recorded in 2000, 623 in 1999 and 656 in 1998

  • The number of false fire alarms increased by less than 1% to 478,300. Within this category the number of false alarms due to apparatus increased by 1% to 283,300 whilst malicious false alarms fell by 10% to 63,200.

The ODPM will make the Fire Statistics Monitor UK: Q2 2003 available here.
