The latest
national fire statistics covering the second quarter of 2003 and the year
ending 30 June 2003 have been published by the Office of the Deputy Prime
Minister.

The UK
Fire and Rescue Service attended just over one million fires and false fire
alarms during the year ending 30 June 2003, ie 3% more than in the previous
year

The total
number of fires attended increased by 6% to 564,900 and within this total,
the number of “primary” fires (fires involving property, vehicles and/or
casualties) fell by 3% to 217,700, but there was a 13% increase (to 335,000)
in the number of “secondary” fires, mainly because of an increase in
grassland fires in the very warm Spring of 2003

The
provisional figure for the number of fire related deaths in the year ending
30 June 2003 is 587, 18 fewer than in the year ending 30 June 2002. This
compares with 613 recorded in 2000, 623 in 1999 and 656 in 1998

The number
of false fire alarms increased by less than 1% to 478,300. Within this
category the number of false alarms due to apparatus increased by 1% to
283,300 whilst malicious false alarms fell by 10% to 63,200.
