10 May 2004 - Combating Risk Taking at Height

A recent report prepared by Loughborough University, Ergomaniacs Ltd and Aston Business School and funded by the HSE, has attempted to identify what factors could contribute to the behaviour of those who have fallen while working at height, those who have not, and a group labelled 'recidivist risk takers' who work at height.   The study tries to assess why some individuals take risks when working at height and sets out a wide range of interventions aimed at reducing risk taking behaviour.

Suggested interventions include:

  • providing more supervision

  • specific training

  • preventing risk takers from working at height.

The publication is based on detailed interviews with a mixture of those who:

  • have suffered injury as a result from falling from height

  • work at height but have not suffered a fall

  • supervise the work.
