31 March 2005 - Construction Blitz in Gloucestershire Results in Stoppages

Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out an unannounced inspection blitz in the Gloucestershire area within the construction industry recently.   They have reported, that following inspections of 51 sites, 16 work activities were stopped or suspended immediately until incorrect health and safety practices had been altered.

The two week blitz ran from 11 February 2005 to 11 March 2005, with 6 HSE inspectors spot checking 51 construction sites covering 78 companies.

Activities incurring enforcement notices were as follows:

  • Working at height without adequate safeguards.

  • Poor manual handling.

  • Transport on site.

  • Poor site organisation.

One improvement notice for provision of adequate washing facilities to prevent cement dermatitis was also issued to one company.

Sue Adsett, HSE Inspector responsible for the co-ordination of the blitz commented:

"The construction blitz showed how the information packs sent out from HSE centrally had reached the audience intended. I was impressed by the fact that many of the companies knew about the initiative. However some companies are doing a lot more than others to try and reduce work related ill health and accidents. The fact that we found 16 activities that needed to be suspended immediately shows that this kind of health and safety campaign is vitally important and it gave us the opportunity to focus advice where it was needed most.

"HSE construction Inspectors will be undertaking another campaign later this year."
