22 March 2005 - HSE Three Year Initiative Launched Within Waste and Recycling Industry

A 3-year initiative has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in a bid to reduce fatalities and serious accidents within the waste and recycling industry.

The initiative will take the role of visiting both private companies and half of all councils who manage or contract out waste/recycling services, by means of initial visits by HSE Inspectors.   The HSE Inspectors will assess policies, control measures and management procedures.

Where the inspectors findings deem improvements should be made, a follow-up visit will be made one year later to ensure any necessary improvements have been carried out.   An on-going series of seminars will also take place throughout the initiative providing advice and guidance.

Inspectors will be concentrating on specific areas within the management of health and safety as follows:

  • The design, specification and management of contracts.

  • Workplace transport.

  • Manual handling.

  • Employee welfare.
