31 March 2004 - Violence Against NHS Staff - Conflict Training Offered

The NHS is to embark on its largest-ever national training exercise this week, in an attempt to help frontline staff deal with the problem of violence and abuse in the workplace.

The Conflict Resolution Training one-day course will be offered to all the 730,000 NHS employees who come in to regular contact with the public in the course of their jobs, and will be held at the new NHS Security Management Service (NHS SMS) training centre in Coventry.   It will teach all frontline staff techniques to help them recognise and then defuse potentially violent situations.

Jim Gee, chief executive of the NHS SMS commented:

"Violence against NHS staff is inexcusable and will not be tolerated.   Conflict Resolution Training allows those on the frontline to protect themselves and their colleagues without resorting to physical restraint."
