3 June 2004 - Report on Safety and Integrity of Repaired Welds

A new report has been produced by Serco Assurance for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on the safety and integrity of repaired welds.

The new report details the first phase of a proposed multi-stage project which aims to provide general guidance on when welded repairs may or may not be beneficial.   It also proposes a suitable engineering procedural method for assessing the integrity of repaired welds on a case-by case basis. Welds considered are appropriate to ferritic material.

The firs-phase in the project has involved:

  • the review of current industrial practices and previous problems and assessment of the literature

  • scoping calculations to establish a matrix of cases to consider

  • weld and specimen manufacture

  • material characterisation tests

  • residual stress measurements

  • tests involving photoelastic coating and thermal emission methods

  • development of finite element models

  • the application of finite element models to matrix cases

  • assessment by engineering procedure methods

  • provisional guidance on weld repairs

  • provisional guidance on engineering procedure methods

  • recommendations for future phases of the project.

Research Report 191: Integrity of Repaired Welds (Phase 1) - Deliverable 5 Summary Report can be found here.
