10 June 2004 - New Guidance: Maintenance System Assessment

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a guidance document on maintenance systems - Research Report 237: Maintenance System Assessment: Guidance Document.

The Handbook says it 'gives advice and guidance on fundamental structural and organisational elements involved in a Maintenance System and on methods to establish their existence, their degree of sophistication and their effectiveness.'

The report investigates the requirements for the routine survey and overhaul of structures, plant, machinery and equipment.

Even though the report deals with machinery systems and related services, such as instrumentation instead of structural, process or electrical system maintenance, the general guidelines relating to maintenance systems apply equally to all.

The report examines:

  • an overview of maintenance systems

  • elements of maintenance systems

  • maintenance system design

  • scheduled maintenance

  • unscheduled maintenance

  • the condition of maintained equipment

  • maintenance software programmes

  • maintenance system assessment

  • evaluation of the effectiveness of maintenance systems.

You can view the report here.
