9 July 2004 - Commitment to reduction of RIDDOR Reportable Accidents

An Accident Reduction Charter has been signed by the Environmental Services Association (ESA) and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in a bid to reduce RIDDOR Reportable Accidents in the waste management industry.

The aim of the charter is to reduce these incidents by 10% each year until the year 2007 and to eliminate fatalities by the end of that period.

The ESA Accident Reduction Charter is administered by the Environmental Services Association and is also endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive.

ESA Chairman Mr David Riddle commented:

ESA’s Members are committed to promoting the highest standards across the waste management industry.   Protecting the Health and Safety of our workforce is a central component of business activity and we take our responsibilities very seriously.

“The Accident Reduction Charter is a high level commitment by ESA’s Members, supported by the Health and Safety Executive, to identify and encourage good practice across the whole industry and to develop guidance where appropriate.

Judith Hackitt, Health and Safety Commissioner also commented:

The Health and Safety Executive welcomes and supports this important initiative.   It is crucial that sectoral trade associations such as ESA support and encourage the individual companies to improve health and safety performance and spread good practice across the whole sector.

“ESA is the natural focus for Health and Safety good practice across the waste management sector and must continue to play the lead role in ensuring that the industry is a safe place to work.
