400 local authorities (LAs) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are responsible for the enforcement of health and safety in Great Britain under the general direction of the Health and Safety Commission (HSC). The HSE has highlighted on its web site, what is being done by the LA's and HSE to tackle key issues to protect the health and safety of the 11 million people employed in 1.2 million registered premises around Great Britain, and the millions of members of the public who walk through their doors every week.
