27 July 2004 - Latest Fire Statistics Show Deaths are on the Increase

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has published the latest statistics covering the third quarter of 2003 and the year ending 30 September 2003.   The figures show a rise in the number of fire-related deaths for this period.

Facts and figures:

  • the provisional figure for the number of fire-related deaths in the year ending 30 September 2003 is 624, 30 more than in the previous 12-month period

  • injuries resulting from fires fell by 7% to 15,800, the lowest figure recorded since the revised fire statistics collection was introduced in 1994

  • the UK Fire and Rescue Service attended just over 1 million fires and false fire alarms during the year ending 30 September 2003, 7% more than in the previous year

  • the total number of fires attended increased by 14% to 603,000

  • the number of false fire alarms increased by less than 1% to 479,500 and the number of false alarms due to apparatus also increased by less than 1% to 283,200

  • malicious false alarms fell by 11% to 60,900
