15 July 2004 - RoSPA Conference Aims to Improve Health and Safety at Work in Scotland

A major event organised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is to be held at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on 15 and 16 of September.   The RoSPA Scotland Safety and Health at Work Congress Learning, Sharing, Moving Forward, sponsored by ESS, aims to help Scottish businesses and organisations keep their employees safe and fit for work.

Provisional figures for 2002/3 show:

  • 36 employed and self-employed people were killed in occupational accidents in Scotland

  • 2,882 were involved in major accidents

  • 10, 258 had to have more than three days off work with injuries

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA Occupational Safety Adviser, commented:

Maintaining momentum for better health and safety at work is a tough challenge.   The health and safety community needs to use every lever at its disposal to keep pace with change.

“It is important for employers to be open to new ways of thinking and to learn from the successes and failures of others.   This conference gives them the ideal opportunity to hear from safety experts and also to take part in practical sessions
.”

Speakers will be dealing with issues such as the role of employers’ compulsory liability insurance in raising standards, embedding health and safety management in business education and new developments in compensation and rehabilitation.   Sessions on health at work will deal with manual handling, managing asbestos in buildings, tackling stress, and promoting healthy working lives.   Practical sessions will deal with topics such as: work-related road safety; tackling slips, trips and falls; and team-based approaches to health and safety management.
