14 July 2004 - Bill Callaghan Continues as Chair of HSC for Further Three Years

It has been announced by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Andrew Smith, that Bill Callaghan will continue his role as Chair of the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) for a further three years.

Mr Callaghan has held the position since October 1999 and has since taken forward the "Revitalising" Health and Safety campaigns, leading to the publication of the HSC’s "Strategy for workplace health and safety in Great Britain to 2010 and beyond."

Mr Callaghan has had considerable experience and has served on the boards of Business in the Community and the Basic Skills Agency, also serving on the Low Pay Commission from 1997 - 2000 and was a member of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Research Priorities Board.    He is a member of the DTI’s Fair Markets Board and is a Visiting Fellow of Nuffield College.   Previous to his HSC role he was the Chief Economist and Head of the Economic and Social Affairs Department at the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Mr Smith commented:

"Bill is an excellent chair of the Commission and has led it through an important period of change. His reappointment will help ensure that Britain continues to lead the world in workplace health and safety."
