7 January 2005 - New Occupational Health
Website Launched in Three Languages
Navigation

A new occupational health website has been launched by the World
Health Organisation (WHO) now offered in three languages, English, French and
Spanish.
The WHO is the United Nations specialised agency for health.
They say that fatalities, injuries and illness in the workplace is at
unacceptably high levels, causing an enormous health burden in suffering and
loss to the economy of between 4 and 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). This
loss amounts to figures of 2 million work-related deaths per year, which are
figures given by the International Labour Organisation for the year 2000.
The estimation from WHO of workers who have access to a basic
standard of occupational health services, totals only 10 to 15% of workers. WHO,
therefore are implementing a Global strategy of the following points:
-
provide evidence for policy, legislation and support to
decision-makers, including work to estimate the magnitude of the burden of
occupational diseases and injuries
-
provide infrastructure support and development through capacity
building, information dissemination and networking
-
support the protection and promotion of workers’ health.
