8 February 2005 - Revised Guidelines for
Cockle, Mussel and Shrimp Harvesters
Navigation

Provision has been made within the Health and Safety Executive's
(HSE's) website with information on "revised guidelines for safe working in
estuaries and tidal areas when harvesting produce such as cockles, mussels and
shrimps".
Since the deaths of 21 Chinese cockle pickers in Morecambe Bay
in February 2004 and guidelines were introduced, the HSE have now produced
revised guidelines, taking account of lessons learned.
The revised guidelines contain information on such areas as the
following:
-
Information required prior to work. i.e. Local tide tables and
an accurate watch.
-
Correct Equipment required. i.e. High Visibility clothing which
is both warm and weatherproof. A suitable Communications device.
-
Plan for any potential problems which may arise.
-
Provision of sensible vehicles.
-
Provision of life jackets and rafts.
-
Be prepared for changes in weather conditions.
-
Manual handling precautions and provisions for first aid.
Full revised guidelines, free leaflets, help and advice can be
