4 February 2005 - New HSE Webpage for Health and Safety in the Paper Industry

Navigation

A new webpage has been created within the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website, providing information and advice for paper and board manufacturers.

Paper mills employ around 20,000 direct employees, plus many contractors and has a very high accident rate, which the Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee (PABIAC) acknowledge and are addressing by means of a framework for action with key areas such as the following:

  • Machinery safety (main causes of injury)

  • Workplace transport

  • Manual handling

  • Occupational Health and Safety.

The PABIAC, comprises of a committee of representatives from the CBI, TUC and the HSE and base their framework for action on HSG 65 "Successful Health and Safety Management" concept, which aims at reducing ill health in areas such as paper, corrugating, packaging, tissue and conversion and recovered paper industries.

There will be a clearly defined timetable for end results within each project, as PABIAC are keen to develop further measures of health and safety performance, covering management systems and culture and technology.

Further information on health and safety in the paper industry can be accessed from the new HSE webpage by clicking the following:   Health and Safety in the Paper Industry
