23 February 2005 - HSE Campaign Highlights
Safety Benefit to Business Finances
Navigation

A National advertising campaign has been launched by the Health
and Safety Executive (HSE), with the aim of encouraging businesses to provide
best practice health and safety management within the workplace, which will in
turn create financial rewards.
The campaign shows successful case studies, highlighting
benefits to companies in such areas as reduction in accidents and injuries,
reduction in absenteeism, reduction in insurance costs, better output and
financial gains for companies.
A few examples of these case studies are as follows:
-
The Associated Octel Company Ltd., employing 700, reduced
injuries related to hours worked by 50% and a reduction in production costs of
40%.
-
Port of London Authority employing 365 staff, reduced
absenteeism by 70%.
-
British Polythene Industries plc (BPI) rehabilitation scheme
reduced lost working days for musculoskeletal disorders by 80%.
-
Legoland Windsor, reduced accident reports by 80%.
UK Minister for Work commented:
"This is an impressive range of companies who have produced
case studies proving that an active approach to health and safety is good for
business. In particular the reductions in days lost through ill-health that some
have achieved pay off financially and should encourage other businesses to
follow their example."
Director General of the CBI said:
"There is a real and growing body of evidence that effective
health and safety management is good for business. Whether it is reduced
insurance premiums or claims, fewer staff absences, less turnover and
recruitment costs. There are now many examples of how companies have made
positive health and safety decisions work for them. The message of sensible and
proportionate health and safety is one on which business should act."
HSE Director General said of the studies:
"These case studies have a vital role to play in taking
forward the business case agenda for health and safety. There are powerful
messages coming out of many of them - namely that managing health and safety
cannot be viewed in isolation from managing a business overall. The studies
highlight the contribution that good communications, sound training and
development and meaningful worker involvement all make."
