23 February 2005 - Change in Delivery
Drivers 50 metre Belt-up Regulations
Navigation

A change to the wearing of seatbelts regulations for delivery
drivers and their passengers will be implemented on Tuesday, 1 March 2005.
However, the change will not affect delivery drivers or their passengers
travelling less than 50 meters, which after consultations, was deemed to be a
reasonable safe distance to travel without a seatbelt, whilst on deliveries.
It is viewed that the change in regulations will reduce the 20
deaths, 240 serious injuries and 1,000 minor injuries occurring yearly.
The current wearing of seatbelt requirements rate for van
drivers is 30% with van driver passengers being 43%. In comparison,
car drivers rate is 93% and their passengers 94%.
Road Safety Minister said of the change:
"Following consultation, we decided that 50m was a reasonable
distance to travel without wearing a seatbelt when undertaking deliveries or
collections. Those carrying out genuine house-to-house calls will not be
affected by the change.
"Making the law on this issue clear will help us bring down
the number of delivery drivers risking injury by not wearing a seatbelt."
