FORUM INITIATIVE
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have commended a new
health and safety initiative within the British Sky Broadcasting company (BSkyB),
which sees both management and employees creating a Forum to discuss health and
safety issues within the workplace. The Forum meets up to 6 times
each year.
A panel of 67 staff representatives, elected by BSkyB employees
can now consult with management, fellow workers and BSkyB's executive committee
on subjects such as health and safety and training and development for the
betterment of workers and the company.
A HSE Inspector, familiar with the initiative and London Based
commented:
"An actively engaged workforce is fundamental to successful
health and safety. A consultative approach can improve the bottom line of a
company by reducing injuries and ill health. I am confident that the Sky Forum
will bring real benefits to Sky and its employees."
Group Head of Health and Safety at BSkyB said:
"Sky has launched this initiative because it recognises the
importance of open dialogue about important workplace issues such as health and
safety. We want the Forum to be a real voice for Sky staff and to help us to
achieve continued business success."
OCCUPATIONAL DRIVING RISK REDUCTION PROGRAMME
Mr. Mark Sayer, Head of Health and Safety at BSkyB, a former
police health and safety manager, has also headed a major occupational driving
risk reduction programme for 200 company car drivers and 600 car allowance and
casual drivers within the BSky B group.
Approximately 200 high-mileage drivers have completed an on-road driving course and as at January 2005, lower risk drivers underwent a CD
Rom on-line driving risk assessment.
Mr. Mark Sayer, said of the occupational driving scheme:
"We are a high-profile organisation and it is imperative that we
have in place, and actively pursue, measures to reduce the potential for injury
and fatalities among our driving employees. Occupational driving has
been highlighted as a key risk area across the media industry."
BSkyB Fleet Manager, Sara Cook added:
"Minimising occupational road risk requires collaboration
between health and safety, fleet operations and senior management.
It's because we are taking a seamless approach that we will reduce driver,
vehicle and corporate risk within BSkyB."
