2 February 2005 - New HSE Webpage for Health and Safety in Quarry Industry

Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have made provision within their website for Health and Safety in the Quarry Industry, in order to tackle the high rate of injury within the industry.   The quarry industry has the highest injury rate and averaged 3 times above the construction injury rate in June 2000.

Figures recorded for injury between 1991/92 to 2000/01 reached over 3,036, with 19 fatalities.   However, a 46% reduction in accidents was achieved since the Hard Target Initiative was launched in 2000.

The main causes of injury within the industry still remain as follows:

  • Manual handling - Musculoskeletal injury

  • Falls from heights

  • Transport

  • Slips and Trips.

Whilst the main causes of occupational ill-health still remain as follows:

  • Musculoskeletal injury

  • Hand/arm vibration

  • Asthma

  • Noise

  • Silica.

The new website area providing information, resources and points of contact can be accessed by clicking the following:  Health and Safety in the Quarry Industry
