14 February 2005 - HSE Hosting Safety
Awareness Day for Woodworking Industry
Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), as part of their
successful Safety Awareness Day campaign, are now providing an event for
woodworking businesses in Dumfries & Galloway and Cumbria, which is due to take
place on Thursday, 17 February 2005 at Cumbria Institute of Arts in Carlisle.
The woodworking industry has, since 1999, shown recorded serious
injury figures for the Cumbria area as being 94 with Dumfries & Galloway showing
93.
The HSE have invited woodworking businesses to this event and
perceive attendance to be of a positive nature in businesses commitment to
better health and safety management and are expecting businesses within the
industry to put into practice the guidance given.
The HSE regional Principal Inspector commented:
"The rate of major injury in woodworking is over twice the
manufacturing average. In fact, in the league table of industries causing the
highest rates of major injuries, the manufacture of wood and wood products is in
3rd place behind scrap and waste recycling, and mining. Construction comes in at
7 and agriculture at 12.
"The Safety Awareness Day will feature practical interactive
demonstrations of scenarios that regularly feature in the accidents reported by
woodworking businesses. These will include typical machinery and manual handling
accidents. Each scenario will highlight the risks involved and give practical
demonstrations on how these risks can be eliminated or reduced to acceptable
levels.
"HSE is working in partnership with Didac Ltd (a woodworking
training provider) in running the events along with several industry trade
associations. The day offers attendees the unique opportunity of being able to
discuss safety issues with the people responsible for enforcing the law on
neutral ground.
"Any woodworking business receiving an invitation to this
free event should make every effort to attend".
