8 December 2004 - Health and Safety No Excuse for Discrimination of Disabled

Health and safety is no excuse for discriminating against employing people with disabilities, states a new guidance leaflet published by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.   The guidance highlights the fact that there are positive benefits to companies who provide accessibility and safe practices for the disabled.   Compliance with Anti-discrimination Legislation not only provides safe working conditions for the disabled, but provides a safer, more accessible environment for all employees and clients alike.

Included within the guidance are the following:

  • How to incorporate the principal of adapting work and workplaces to people in order to provide accessible and safe employment for the disabled
  • Risk assessments which are disability sensitive
  • A checklist is listed showing how to provide a safe workplace for disabled workers within areas such as working environment, communication, organisation and duties, signposting, working hours, training and supervision, promotion and transfer and emergency procedures

The European Agency Director commented:

"Europe needs to employ an increasingly diverse workforce, and this factsheet provides practical support towards this objective. We hope it will stimulate workplaces to take positive actions, and that this will lead to better jobs for workers with disabilities."
