9 August 2004 - New Research Into the Benefits of Warming up Before Work

New research commissioned by HSE into the benefits of warming up before work, is being carried out by Human Engineering, a human factors consultancy.   The research is looking into the impact of performing limbering up exercises, in reducing the risks of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Work so far has included a literature review covering international sources, particularly from Japan where exercise forms part of daily routine for much of the workforce.   An analysis of the relevant MSD data has also been done to identify the most prevalent conditions in order that measures can be prioritised and targeted for maximum benefit.

Industry feedback is being sought by Human Engineering via a consultation document on the project.   They would like to know your views on whether or not your experience of MSDs and limbering up exercises back up the findings of the review of the MSD literature and data.

Results from the research in 2001/02:

  • an estimated 1,126,000 people in Great Britain suffered from a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) which, in their opinion, was caused or made worse by their current or past work

  • it is estimated that 12.3 million working days (full-day equivalent) were lost in 2001/02 through MSDs caused or made worse by work

  • on average, each sufferer took an estimated 19 days off in that 12 month period

The consultation document can be accessed by clicking the following link:  Limbering Up to Prevent Musculoskeletal Disorders
