A series of unannounced, planned inspections by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are to be carried out during October 2004, within the manufacturing industry in the Scottish Borders. HSE said the likelihood of inspection will not be affected by attendance at the seminar and is merely to provide the opportunity to listen, gather information, discuss issues and ask questions which will benefit businesses in the meeting of their legal obligations and insuring they provide a safe working environment which is safe and healthy for their employees. The unannounced inspections will focus on compliance with UK health and safety legislation, which will concentrate on the Health and Safety Commission's priority areas including the following:
The above topics within the British workplaces cause the majority of deaths, injuries and illnesses. For those businesses who have not already been contacted by the HSE, and who would like to attend the seminar, contact Ailsa Braidwood at the HSE to check for availability, telephone: 0131 247 2000.
