19 August 2004 - Research into Health & Safety of Homeworkers

The trend towards employees working from home, either full-time or part-time has increased and will more than likely continue to increase.

In a bid to determine how the homeworkers' health and safety is being addressed, a new research has been done, Health and Safety of Homeworkers: Good Practice case studies - RAS/04/08, by the Science Group, Human Factors.

The group visited 12 organisations, in a bid to offer good practice examples, which the results of will be beneficial to the forthcoming review by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on their guidance for the health and safety of homeworkers.

Within the group chosen for the research, four different sectors and activities of the homeworker were considered. The information gathered was to determine the difficulties and how they were resolved.

Some matters addressed in the study were:

  • sources of health and safety information

  • communication

  • risk assessment

  • equipment provision and maintenance

  • organisation

  • information

  • training

  • incident reporting
