Highlights Risks in London Construction Industry

The Workers Memorial Day, held in London yesterday (Thursday 28
April), has highlighted the risks of being seriously injured or killed within
the construction industry in the London area to be 17% greater than the rest of
the U.K.
Some of the key facts, highlighted at the event in London were
as follows:

When averaged, construction workers in London are 17% more
likely to be killed or seriously injured that elsewhere in Great Britain.

The London construction industry had 10 fatalities in 2003/04
with minimum of a further 8 fatalities since April 2004.

The construction industry had the highest rates of fatal and
major injuries to employees (395.6 per 100,000) and the highest rate of
over-3-day injuries (773.3 per 100,000) of any industry.

There were 28 people killed at work in London in 2003/04, a
substantial increase on the previous 2 years.

There were almost 3,000 major injuries with more than 12,000
injuries necessitating a 3-day plus absence from work.
Campaigners slogan "Remember the dead and fight for the living",
will be spotlighted as they call for "world class" health and safety practices
within workplaces in London.
