Investigation by Police and HSE
Navigation

Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have launched
an investigation into the seriously marred safety record of the Corus-owned
company following a further fatality of a 52 year old father of two, working
within the Corus-owned Aluminised Products Plant in Wales, namely Mr. Hywel
Thomas.
Work has been halted in the plant, which employs around 75
people.
This latest fatality is neither the first nor the second
incident within the Corus-owned group in the UK over the past few years.
Some of the other incidents involved the following:
-
December 2003 - fine of £150,000 and £50,000 costs - Scunthorpe
steel plant
-
February 2003 - fined of £10,000 and £1,286 costs - Portrack
Stockton.
-
January 2003, maintenance engineer, was killed at the Corus tin
plate works in Llanelli, Wales.
-
November 2001, three workers died in an explosion at the Corus
steelworks in Port Talbot.
-
March 2005, steelworker at Corus’s Scunthorpe plant was
seriously burnt after falling into a pit of effluent and remains in a “poorly
but stable” condition.
Corus chief executive, Philippe Varin, expressed his concern in
September last year, over the company's safety record, particularly the high
number of what he called “contractor incidents.”
