16 April 2005 - Glasgow Plastics Factory Explosion

Navigation

An explosion within Carrick Plastics, Springburn, Glasgow has resulted in 2 workers left with severe burns and 4 others with minor injuries.

The factory employs up to 100 people and is a production plant for plastic bottles and containers.

Workers have described the explosion as having produced a "big orange flame" with one workers' opinion being that one machine had blown up either because of too much hydrogen being put into it, or something having ignited it.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) spokesman said of the incident:

"One of our inspectors is liaising with the emergency services and will be trying to establish what happened, how it happened, if anyone is at fault and what lessons can be learned."

A Carrick Holdings spokeswoman declined any comment at this time.
