11 April 2005 - New Vibration at Work
Regulations 2005 Enforceable in July
Navigation

On Wednesday 6 July 2005, the new Vibration at Work Regulations
2005 (SI 2005 No. 1093) will become enforceable.
The requirement of the new regulations will mean that employers
must protect workers (and other persons who may be affected by the work) from
the potential long term risks of damage by exposure to either whole-body or
hand/arm vibration at work. Employers will have duties placed upon
them to provide the minimum health and safety requirements in order to avoid
this risk.
The new regulations require employers to take the following
actions:
-
Introduce action values and limit values for daily exposure to
vibration.
-
Required to undertake a risk assessment.
-
Required to eliminate or, where elimination is not reasonably
practicable, reduce exposure to vibration to as low a level as is reasonably
practicable.
-
Introduce a programme of measures to be taken at the action
values to reduce exposure to vibration to as low a level as is reasonably
practicable
-
Required to take action at the limit values and prohibition on
exceeding the limit values.
-
Allow weekly averaging of exposure to vibration in specified
circumstances.
-
Required to implement health surveillance.
-
Required to provide information, instruction and training.
