26 April 2004 - International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) on Wed 28 April |
||
|
A large number of events will take place this week in this country and around the world to mark International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD), Wednesday 28 April. Its purpose is to remember all those killed at or by work, and to strengthen our resolve to reduce risks and protect people. The service will start at 12.15pm and finish at 1.00pm on Wednesday 28 April on the North side of the river in the church of St James Garlickhythe, Garlick Hill, just off Upper Thames Street and about a five-minute walk from HSE's London HQ at Rose Court. Taken from the HSE web site: "IWMD
originated in Canada. In the USA it has been recognised since 1989. 28 April
was chosen as it is the anniversary of the Occupational Health and Safety
Act in the USA and commemorates the day that 28 people were killed in a
construction incident in Connecticut. Since 1989 trade unions in the USA,
the UK, Asia, Europe and Africa have organised events on and around 28
April. IWMD was adopted by the Scottish TUC in 1993, followed by the TUC in
1999 and HSE in 2000. More details can be found on the TUC web site here. More details can be found on the Hazards Magazine web site here. |
