5 April 2004 - Charging by the Fire and Rescue Authorities

In February 2004, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister issued a consultation paper on charging by the fire and rescue authorities for their services.

Forty of the fire and rescue services in England and Wales answered a questionnaire with regard to what special services they already charge for.   According to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Fire and Rescue Service Newsletter 2, (March 2004), in August 2003:

  • 63% felt it was right to charge for clearing up chemical spills

  • some 35% considered that they should charge for providing firefighting equipment on dedicated standby at sporting events or film locations

  • a total of 23% said that providing an interviewing officer or a fire report to a solicitor for an insurance claim should be charged as a special service.

The closing date for the consultation is 7 May 2004, and the consultation document can be found here.
