11 October 2006 - Review of HSE CHaPSI Tool
Navigation

A review of the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) voluntary Corporate
Health and Safety Performance Indicator (CHaSPI), launched in July 2005, has
been undertaken by Greenstreet Berman Ltd/Enable Infomatrix Ltd. and a report
has been published outlining recommendations for further improvements to the
web-based tool.
The CHaSPI measuring tool, which uses qualitative and quantitative data, was
introduced to assist large organisations with over 250 employees to measure
effectiveness of their internal controls over their own health and safety
performance.
The aim of the tool was to encourage and help organisations improve
their health and safety performance beyond the legal minimum.
Some of the recommendations for further improvements are as follows:
- Alternative Injury Rate schemes, with a number of different calculations
depending on whether a user selects between UK and US injury reporting
standard.
- A low-risk organisation version to determine if an alternative question
set would have more validity and predictive power for these companies.
- Merging the occupational health and the health and safety management
indicators together.
