23 September 2005 - Violence in the Workplace Still Shocking

Navigation

The latest British Crime Survey by the Home Office for England and Wales, although showing a downward trend, still reports shocking results for the number of victims of violence in the workplace.

The figures show there are more than 1 million incidents of violence in the workplace, with approximately one quarter involving physical assault.

According to the survey, the Industries affected most by violence in the workplace are as follows:

  • Police Officers.

  • Social Workers.

  • Probation Officers.

  • Security Guards.

  • Bar Staff.

  • Nurses.

  • Teachers.

  • Retail Workers.

The report suggests there are 7 violent incidents each month within each individual NHS Trust in England alone, which is a total of approximately 65,000 incidents each year, with around two thirds being attacks on nursing staff.

Nurses in Wales are subjected, on average, to 22 attacks of aggressive or violent behaviour every day.
