20 September 2005 - HSE's New Chief
Inspector of Construction
Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have announced the
appointment of their new Chief Inspector of Construction Mr. Stephen Williams.
Mr. Williams took up his new position yesterday Monday 19 September 2005.
Mr. Williams, previously Head of HSE's Railway Policy Division,
takes over from Mr. Kevin Myers, who now holds the position of Director of
Hazardous Installations Directorate in Bootle.
Mr. Williams joined the HSE in 1977 as a frontline inspector and has
progressed in his career within such areas as the following:
- Advising Central Government Ministers on health and safety policy, whilst
holding posts within the HSE.
- Overseeing/supporting many rail change programmes, including the removal
of slam door trains from railway network and policy relating to the
introduction of the TPWS.
- Responsible for developing and maintaining the regulatory framework for
the construction industry.
- Implementation of the Temporary or Mobile Worksites Directive, implemented
by the CDM regulations.
Commenting on his new appointment, Mr. Williams said:
"I am delighted to be taking on this position at such a challenging time
for the industry. The world will be focusing on our safety record during the
construction of the 2012 Olympic sites and the revised Construction Design
Management (CDM) regulations will mean new ways of working.
"My aim is to see an industry that gets health and safety right first
time, right from the start, and with the right people involved. It is only by
the industry showing leadership, working in partnership and taking ownership
of the management of risk that improvements will be made. I look forward to
working with the industry to achieve the challenging targets it agreed at the
Construction Summit."
We at HSfB congratulate Mr. Williams on his new appointment and wish him
every success for the future.
