13 September 2005 - RoSPA Cash For Cars Seminar

Navigation

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) will be hosting a seminar on Practical Risk Management of work-related road safety issues facing businesses on 2 November 2005, at Edgeley Park Conference Centre, Stockport.

The seminar, sponsored by Toyota GB, will look at the safety of Cash for Cars policy as well as discussions in such areas as the following:

  • Employees own vehicles being used for work purposes.

  • Problems with drink and drugs.

  • Management of occupational road risk and how line managers and drivers need to be developed to play their part.

RoSPA is in the process of developing a new guidance document for bosses who have employees who use their own vehicles for work, of which proposals will be outlined at the seminar by Mr. Kevin Clinton, RoSPA Head of Road Safety.

Mr. Clinton said:

“Employers owe the same duty of care under health and safety law to staff who drive their own vehicles for work as they do to employees who drive company-owned, leased or hired vehicles.

“They still need to check if those vehicles are fit for work purposes and are safe and properly maintained.

“Organisations with a ‘cash for cars’ option may wish to review this to see whether the perceived advantages outweigh the disadvantages of managing staff’s own vehicles. Adopting a ‘cash for cars’ policy does not absolve employers from their health and safety obligations.”

Some of the subjects under discussion at the seminar will be as follows:

  • Roger Singer, Head of Avoidd, will look at the drink and drugs problem for fleet drivers, such as the morning after effect, which could be worsened by the extension of licensing hours policy.

  • Melvyn Hodgetts, Head of Safety, Royal Mail, will look at driver fatigue in his presentation on developing a risk management approach.

  • Charles Davis, RoSPA Head of Driver and Fleet Solutions, will look at how to develop drivers and their line managers.

Mr. Charles Davis commented:

“Driving is the most dangerous work activity that most people undertake and we are pleased that more and more employers are recognising this.

Our seminar will give them up-to-the-minute information about how to deal with this issue.”
