2 September 2005 - HSE Target Construction Sites Nationally in October

Navigation

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Construction Division Inspectors will, throughout the month of October 2005, target near completion construction sites nationally, where they will be looking at good order and low fall issues.

With many different contractors working in one area and the added pressure of time limits, construction sites can often be very untidy, which creates a greater risk of slips, trips and falls from height occurring.

Some of the things the inspectors will be on the lookout for are as follows:

  • If you are a Principal Contractor - a system for the procurement and control of contractors that includes arrangements to check the competence should be in place.  Active monitoring of work of subcontractors.

  • If you are a Dutyholder - You are required to identify jobs that involve work at height and ensure that appropriate precautions are in place.  Work areas should be kept as clear as possible of un-neccessary materials, equipment, debris and other hazards. Walkways and stairs should be kept free of tripping hazards such as trailing wires and loose materials, especially where there are emergency routes.

The HSE have provided a Webpage for their "Fit out Campaign", which they shall be updating in November with site findings.

There is lots of information on the HSE's Fit out Webpage and is well worth adding to your favourites in order to check out the November updates.
