15 October 2005 - Free Machine Accident
Investigation Kit for SME's
Navigation

Procter Machinery Guarding is launching a free tool which will
help Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SME's) in the manufacturing industry
investigate machine-related accidents in the workplace.
The "Machine Accident Investigation Kit" (MAIK), although mainly
aimed at the manufacturing industry, could perhaps also be useful to other
companies who use machinery.
The kit is supplied as a set of Microsoft Word Documents, which
can be used on a PC or printed for manual purposes.
Some of the features of the MAIK are as follows:
-
It includes forms for recording what happened in the accident,
thus identifying the root cause.
-
It has an area for taking statements from the injured party,
witnesses, supervisors, line managers and others.
-
Guidance notes are included to assist anyone not familiar with
accident investigation procedures.
-
A list of useful resources, including some from the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) relating to accidents is also provided in the kit.
-
If the kit is being used on a PC, hyperlinks give direct access
to the resources that are available via the internet.
Jeremy Procter, Convenor of the European standards Committee
responsible for Machine Guards and Managing Director of Procter Machinery
Guarding, said:
"Having talked to numerous managers in manufacturing
companies where there have been accidents involving machinery, I believe there
is a genuine need for this type of Machine Accident Investigation Kit.
"People do not generally want to alert the health and safety authorities to the
fact that they have had an accident; and while they have a desire to do the
right thing, they do not know where to turn for help.
"I sincerely hope that the Machine Accident Investigation Kit will help
manufacturing companies perform effective investigations that will result in
action being taken to prevent future accidents."
