14 October 2005 - HSA Concern Over
Fatalities of Migrant Workers

Ireland's Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are concerned over
the number of fatalities occurring in work-related incidents to non-English
speaking migrant workers.
HSA figures show a total of 56 deaths so far this year, 7 of
which were migrant workers.
Mr. Tom Beegan, Chief Executive of HSA said:
"We are encouraging employers to protect this asset by
providing safety information and training in a manner, form and language that is
likely to be understood by those workers who do not speak English.
"It is not good enough to simply pass on the message - Employers must satisfy
themselves that the message is hitting home as indeed they would with any other
employee."
The HSA's concern also extends to the UK, where the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) have funded research to assess the patterns of employment
of migrant workers in England and Wales and the main health and safety risks
encountered at work. The research is being carried out by the
Working Lives Research Institute at London Metropolitan University.
