6 October 2005 - Safe-T-Cert for Irelands
Construction Industry
Navigation

A new innovative Occupational Health and Safety Certification
System has been formulated between Northern Ireland and Ireland, namely, the
Safe-T-Cert.
The Safe-T-Cert system requires contractors within the
construction industry in Northern Ireland and Ireland to provide proof of
compliance of current health and safety regulations, together with proof of
continual improvement.
Development of the system began eight years ago by
representatives from the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) in Ireland and
Construction Employers Federation, in Northern Ireland (CEF/NI).
The representatives visited sites within the petrochemical
industry, mainly in Holland, who had developed an Occupational Health & Safety
Management System (OH&S).
The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) oversaw
the competence and integrity of the register of auditors for the programme and a
contract of agreement between IOSH and CEF/CIF was agreed for the formal launch
of Safe-T-Cert.
The two main unique benefits of the Safe-T-Cert are:
-
Clients are assured that certified contractors have an effective
health and safety management system.
-
Safe-T-Cert certification provides contractors with third party
support for pre-qualification and selection.
Insurance companies are being lobbied to look favourably upon
contractors who have taken a pro-active approach to risk management by achieving
the Safe-T-Cert certification.
