6 October 2005 - SPADs Report for August 2005

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) have produced the Signals Passed at Danger report for August 2005, summary of which is as follows:

  • 27 signals were passed at danger, 5 fewer than August 2004 and 8 fewer than the average for August since 2001.

  • 1 was a serious SPAD (risk ranking score 20+), compared with August 2004.

  • 11 SPAD's were at signals with previous SPAD history, 1 of which had been passed at danger 5 times or more since 1985.

  • 1 trains ran past the signal by 200 yards or more.

  • 17 trains ran past the signal by less than 25 yards or less.

  • 10 instances showed it was not the first time the driver had passed a signal at danger.

  • 13 cases showed where the Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) operated successfully.

The above figures are interim and may change when investigations are completed.
