6 October 2005 - Introduction of Flashing Cones and Escort Convoys

Navigation

The Highways Agency are introducing new flashing cones and escort convoys, authorised by the Department for Transport, in a bid to make roadworks safer for workers and drivers.

The flashing cones and escort convoys are currently under trial and after consultation is completed on 31 December 2005, will be amended in the Traffic Signs Manual chapter 8.

The new cones have flashing lights attached, which will lead traffic through new lane layouts.   They will be used on all roads, including roads under the control of the Highways Agency, mainly at the starting point of roadworks.

The escort convoys will be specialist trucks with lighted signage on the back and will be used to guide traffic slowly through roadworks where workers are implementing maintenance and removal of traffic management systems.

Ginny Clarke, Chief Highways Engineer said of the new flashing cones and escort convoys:

"Chapter 8 is an essential guide for safe traffic management and its revisions will mean improved safety guidance for drivers and people involved in road management.

"Recently there have been many advances in modernising traffic management - not least in the way that we help drivers navigate through roadworks whilst maintaining the safety of those working on the carriageway.

"Roads can be a hazardous workplace. We want to ensure that we are doing everything we can to cut down the risk to roadworkers and to make roadworks less stressful for drivers."

Advice from the Highways Agency for drivers when approaching roadworks is as follows:

  • Keep within the speed limit - it is there for your safety.
  • Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching.
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
  • Be alert for works traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
  • Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front.
  • Observe all signs - they are there to help you.
