4 October 2005 - Update on Hatfield Rail Disaster

Navigation

Updating our news item of 7 September 2005, regarding the Hatfield disaster, charges against the four Balfour Beatty maintenance engineers accused of breaching safety rules prior to the disaster were dropped yesterday, Monday 3 October 2005, at the Old Bailey.

The King's Cross to Leeds train was derailed on 17 October 2000, causing 4 deaths and 102 injuries,

Network Rail and Balfour Beatty, who have both been convicted of breaching safety laws, will have sentences passed upon them by Mr. Justice Mackay, the trial judge, later this week, where it is expected substantial fines will be imposed.

The prosecution says warnings of cracked rails were ignored and that "a cavalier approach to safety meant the derailment was an accident waiting to happen."
