16 November 2005 - DRC Film Spotlights Long
Term Illness
Navigation

The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) have released a film,
currently being screened in Vue cinemas across the country until Thursday 5th
January 2006, with the aim of encouraging the UK's long-term illness workers to
"come out" and inform management of their illnesses. By doing this,
employees can help employers manage the many "hidden" disabilities within their
workforces.
If management are unaware of workers who suffer long term
illnesses, then they cannot provide the necessary adjustments required to
benefit both worker and business.
Disabilities, such as the following, come in many forms, all of
which can be overcome in the workplace if managed accordingly.
-
Diabetes.
-
Cancer.
-
Hearing difficulties.
-
Sight impairment.
-
Learning difficulties.
The film, entitled "Appointment" is aimed at dispelling
the myths that disability be only associated with people requiring aids, such as
walking sticks, wheel chairs, white canes etc.
Although Appointment, a 10 minute comedy, is a film which can be
enjoyed by all, the DRC say it "may be particularly useful to those who
advise employers - advisors, accountants, solicitors, HR managers, and equality
trainers - and the owners of businesses themselves."
Mr. Bert Massie, Chairman of the Disability Rights Commission,
said of the film:
“I’m very proud of this film. It helps dispel the myths about
whether disabled people can work and banishes some of the stereotypes.
“I hope it will help people feel more confident about disclosing their
condition. And that it will teach employers that many people in their workplace
probably have some sort of health condition.”
Mr. Benet Middleton, Director of Nations, Regions and
Campaigning at Diabetes UK, also commented on the film by saying:
“Diabetes UK welcomes this film which explores how attitudes
to long-term health conditions can affect people’s chances of getting and
keeping a job.”
